What is the Acai Berry?

Acai this, acai that.  You read about acai berries everywhere.  But what are they?

The Acai berry (pronounced "ah-SIGH-ee") is a purple berry that grows in Central and South America.  The berry thrives in warm, moist, tropical climates.  They aren’t new; they have been around for millions of years.

The natives of the regions where the berries grow have been eating them pretty much forever. It’s fruit; they eat it.

So why are Acai berries in the news so much these days?

The berries have some properties that make them remarkable.  They are unusually nutritious.  They are high in Omega-3 fatty acids.  Some nutritionists claim that this can help speed up the metabolism in humans.  This, in turn, can help them burn calories faster.  For this reason, the Acai berry is frequently used as an ingredient in weight loss products.

The berries are also high in antioxidants, which are thought to help slow the aging process in humans.

It remains to be seen if the Acai berry is truly the "superfood" that it is claimed to be, but without question it is a nutritious fruit that, when taken in moderation as part of a healthy diet, can help people maintain good health.

And there’s nothing wrong with that.
